GTA 5 Meets Drone Racing In New Mod

If you’re prone to motion sickness, we suggest not watching the videos

Commercial drones are a relatively new fad in the grand scheme of things, however enthusiasts have already come up with all kinds of wacky things to do with them – and no, we don’t mean voyeurism. With the immense popularity GTA 5 boasts, it overlaps with the fandom of countless other activities, so it was only a matter of time before drones were added to the game in some capacity.

So what happens when people get their hands on small, compact, remote controlled flying machines? They’re going to compete on who can get from point A to B quickest, and look the coolest while they’re doing it. Drone racing has become ever more popular as drones have become more and more affordable over the years, and drone stunting is another fad that’s on the rise and pretty damn entertaining to watch.

Enter LeFix, a well known GTA 5 modder, and his drone racing mod, FPV Drone Racing. Now, this isn’t the kind of mod where your in-game character stands around with a remote control in hand and the camera stays in its regular over the shoulder configuration while the little drone flys about in the distance. While that would be more representative of the real thing, it wouldn’t be as entertaining.

No, no, this mod puts you in the shoes – propellers, whatever – of the drone itself. The FPV in the mod’s name stands for first person view, or so we assume, since this isn’t clarified anywhere in the description. The mod allows you to control a small and nimble drone flying in acro – drone enthusiasts likely know what that means, but I’m not at home in the lingo.

The demonstration video shown by LeFix is very impressive, but it’s clear that he’s had experience flying these things based on the stunts he pulled, and the number of angry comments decrying the difficulty of controlling the little machine.

It should be noted that if you’re attempting to use this mod with a mouse and keyboard, you’re setting yourself up for failure. There’s a reason why actual drone remotes aren’t keyboards but more akin to game controllers. LeFix warns as much in the mod’s description, which outright states to use a controller when playing.

The drone enthusiasts in the comments have praised the mod thoroughly, and we’ll go ahead and assume their judgement is the definitive one. Looking up videos of real life drone racing makes it pretty clear that this isn’t an easy thing to pull off, with tight turns and narrow passes offering many chances to crash your poor little drone.

This really seems like an entertaining challenge to overcome in the virtual world of GTA 5, where you can learn the rope with no risk, while getting a chance to explore the world from an entirely new perspective. The drone has a handful of advantages over the player character, namely that it’s smaller and it flies.

Zooming through areas and buildings that are otherwise familiar in such a quick and small vehicle will give you a view of them never before seen in regular gameplay. Whether you’re a drone enthusiast yourself, or just a fan of GTA 5 interested in adding new functionality to the game, this mod is great for you.
